The wife of the Akwa Ibom State governor, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel has said the solution to moral decadence currently confronting the nation is for parents and guardians to dedicate more time to the wellbeing of their children.

Mrs. Emmanuel spoke at the 2016 National Parenting Conference ‘ organized by Breach Repairers, a Non-Governmental Organization at the Guiding Light Assembly (GLA), Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

In her keynote address , titled: “Raising a total Nigerian Child”, the Akwa Ibom First Lady said good parenting does not end in inculcating moral values in the children but it is scriptural. “we all know that good parenting emanated from the scriptures weather Muslim or Christian.”

She added that Good Parenting entails the ability of a parent to raise children in the fear of the Lord to take responsibility of their actions and impact positively on the society. The Governor’s wife urged families to inculcate honesty, prudence, discipline and love for one another and respect for constituted authority in the society. She also promised that her pet project- Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Programme (FEYReP) would continue to address family issues and youth reorientation in the society.

In her speech, the former Minister of Education and co-founder of Transparency International, Dr Oby Ezekwezili explained that poor governance in Nigeria today was as a result of poor parenting , as nation building starts with parenthood.

She stressed that most robbers, cultist and kidnappers in the society today learnt their evil ways from their parents and political godfathers which is very bad. Dr. Ezekwezili urged parents to rise and restore the right values and morals among their children in our society.

In his remarks, the Host Minister, Pastor Wale Adefarasin who was also the father of the day, stressed the importance of family in nation building, saying that a good society was fashioned from the family and called on parents to accord their children proper attention so as to become good citizens.

Earlier in his address, the organizer of the conference, Pastor Nduka Chuks thanked the speakers for the encouragement and their contribution in building a better society, assured that the organization would continue to do its best in educating the general society the need to uphold good morals and values.
