In continuation of the 16 DAYS ACTIVISM to End Gender-Based Violence campaign, FEYReP (family empowerment and youth reorientation path-initiative), visited the Uyo High School, a secondary school in the heart of Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, which is both renowned for its population and for producing notable persons in the state, and also notorious for its troubled culture of violence among students and against students of other nearby schools, today December 8, 2025.
The FEYReP team comprised of the coordinator, Mrs. Idorenyin Ekanem Ph. D., the GBV Response Officer, Pastor Idorenyin Atti, the M&E Officer, Mrs. Aniefiok Jackson and the media team, met with the school students, mostly drawn in the senior secondary (SS3) classes.
The team discussed in depth the theme for the 2025 16 days activism, ‘UNITE TO END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AGAINST ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS’.
Information shared ranged from the effect of the ongoing increased violence against women and girls on the internet and how it has defamed the character of the survivors, to the impact of GBV on the vulnerable gender. Ending GBV in entirety was also discussed as well as referral pathway for cases of GBV. The team further spoke to the students on the effects of cultism and substance abuse highlighting how these trigger GBV in the society and pointing out the need to avoid these vices. The Nigerian Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law 2015, was discussed in depth with the students with penalties for GBV offences all outlined.
The team ended the sensitization visit with a call to the students to be of good conduct in order to become better citizens of the society with meaningful contributions to the state in particular and the world at large.
