Capacity Building for Community GBV First Respondents

As a part of the campaign on “Rural Community Mobilization, And Increase in Rural Voices to End GBV” sponsored by the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF), the Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Path-Initiative (FEYReP), conducted a two-days capacity building training for twenty five first gender-based violence (GBV) community response team in the five target coastal communities/Local Government Areas namely; Ewang (Mbo LGA), Udung Essang (Oron LGA), Ndon Eyo (Esit Eket LGA), Eyo Bieme (Urue Offong/Oruko LGA) and Udung Adatang (Udung Uko LGA), all in Akwa Ibom State, to aid in the identification, management and provision of improvised safe spaces and rural based intentional support for GBV victims and survivors. Five participants each were selected by the above-mentioned communities for the training.

On the first day of the training, after the participants had been registered and settled for the events, the coordinator of FEYReP, Dr. Idorenyin Ekanem highlighted the purpose of the exercise and its importance in empowering the participants with necessary knowledge on how to respond to, cater for and manage cases of gender-based violence

In the course of the two days, the participants were trained on basic concepts around SGBV, which dominated the topic for the first day, while the on the second day discussions centered on how to respond to, care for, support manage and handle cases of SGBV with the various forms of support, approaches to handling cases, available services and frameworks etc. all being discussed.

The lead facilitator for the capacity building sessions was Mrs. Abasiefreke Itohowo, who on the first day before the sessions began, administered a pre-test to all participants to assess existing knowledge on GBV concepts and gauge what participant understand about violence, respect and support in the community.

The training held on 24th and 25th of April, 2025.
