Community Engagement on Tropical Rain-forest Restoration.

As part of FEYReP’s commitment to tackle climate change and to ensure clean and green environment, FEYReP’s Youth-Led Climate Action Team on Monday, 9th December 2024, engaged with Itu-Andem Community Leaders and Stakeholders in Ibiono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State to foster collaboration towards the implementation of FEYReP’s Tropical Rainforest Restoration Project – Using a hybrid seeds multiplication innovative approach – Same Specie Emphasis (SSE) with Nursery and Demonstration Farms located in Itu- Andem community

Objectives of the Engagement

  1. To create awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of afforestation.
  2. To secure the support and active participation of Ituandem community leaders and stakeholders in the project.
  3. To outline the framework for establishing a community nursery and demonstration farm using diverse, climate-resilient economic tree species.
  4. To promote youth involvement in sustainable climate action within the community.

 Engagement Highlights

  Introduction of the Project

The FEYReP team introduced the project as a dual-purpose initiative aimed at mitigating climate change effects and enhancing local livelihoods. The focus was on planting trees that would provide environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration and soil conservation and improve biodiversity, while offering economic opportunities through cash and fruit crops.

Consultative Dialogue

  • Community leaders, farmers, youth representatives, and local stakeholders participated in an interactive session.
  • Issues such as land availability, cultural considerations, and maintenance responsibilities were discussed.
  • The community leaders expressed enthusiasm and pledged to mobilize resources to ensure the project’s success.

  Capacity Building

   –  FEYReP team outlined plans for training sessions to equip community members, especially the youth, with skills in nursery management, tree planting, and farm maintenance.

   – Emphasis was placed on integrating sustainable agricultural techniques and environmental stewardship.

  Selection of Plant Species

Cashew, soursop, cocoa, guava, and almond were chosen for their adaptability to local climatic conditions, economic value, and contribution to biodiversity.  These crops were highlighted as ideal for the dual goals of afforestation and income generation.

 Demonstration Farm Design

The demonstration farm was proposed as a pilot model where community members can learn practical techniques for scaling similar projects across Itu-Andem and neighboring areas.  Initial steps, including seed procurement, land preparation, and planting schedules, were agreed upon.

Expected Outcomes

  1. Increased forest cover to combat deforestation and reduce climate change impacts.
  2. Economic empowerment of community members through the sale of tree products and their derivatives.
  3. Strengthened community cohesion and capacity for climate resilience.
  4. Development of a replicable model for sustainable afforestation projects in other communities.

 Conclusion

The engagement with Itu-Andem community leaders and stakeholders marks a significant step in FEYReP’s efforts to integrate local communities into climate action. The collaborative approach ensures that the initiative is both sustainable and beneficial to the community. The FEYReP Youth Climate Action Team remains committed to working closely with Itu-Andem to ensure the successful implementation and long-term viability of the community nursery and demonstration farm.
