FEYReP Sensitizes Secondary School Students Against Gender-Based Violence in Akwa Ibom State.

The Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Path Initiative (FEYReP) has embarked on a two weeks statewide sensitization programme aimed at tackling Gender-Based Violence (GBV) among young people, beginning with students of Community Secondary Commercial School, Ibiaku Itam 2, in Itu Local Government Area today, May 5th, 2026.

The event, which held at the school premises, brought together students, teachers, and the Vice Principal for an interactive session focused on awareness, prevention, and the consequences of Gender Based Violence, as well as the role of youths in promoting a safer society.

Speaking at the event, Head of counselling department, Lady Aniebiet-Abasi Akpan, emphasized the importance of early education on GBV, noting that many cases go unreported due to fear, stigma, and lack of awareness. She further encouraged students to speak up against abuse, seek help when necessary, support victims rather than blame them and told them to reject GBV and work together to create a safer, more supportive environment for all.

On his part, Head of monitoring and evaluation department/GBV, Pastor Idorenyin Atti, addressed the issue of drug abuse among youths, describing it as a major contributing factor to violent behaviour and poor decision-making. He said substance abuse often fuels aggression and harmful actions, adding that students must avoid peer pressure and make informed choices to safeguard their future. He also urged them to focus on their education and personal development.

The Vice Principal of the school, The Reverend, Mfon Ibanga, commended FEYReP for bringing the initiative to the students, describing the programme as timely and impactful. She noted that such engagements are critical in shaping the mindset of young people and promoting discipline and respect among students.
