The Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Path-initiative (FEYReP)’s, “Light Up Africa Through the Lens of Children Project” team took its campaign to Rivers State, Nigeria, when it visited schools im the state on the 19th of February, 2024, in furtherance of its bid to provide sustainable lighting solutions to under-served communities of the South-South Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria.
The project focuses on distributing solar lamps to children in secondary schools, to enhance their access to illumination for reading and other academic needs at nightfall. This FEYReP believes will foster community development via improved academic performances, whilst also mitigating climate and environmental damage through the dependence on fossil fuels for illumination, which in turn poses long term health and environmental risks.
Light Up Africa through the lens of children project is implemented by FEYReP in partnership with partnership with KUCOIN, Griffin Consulting FZCO and African partners WIRE-A and Smiling Simon Greenbuild Foundation.
Accompanying FEYReP on the Rivers State visit were representatives of her project partners, KUCOIN, Smiling Simon Greenbuild Foundation etc as well community representatives.
They (community representatives) expressed gratitude for the project, highlighting how access to reliable solar lighting positively influenced various aspects of their lives, including environmental safety, increased reading time for the children, etc. The project successfully collaborated with local government and educational institutions, ensuring a coordinated effort in reaching remote areas and maximizing the impact of lamp distribution. 300 solar lights were distributed to Western Ahoda Community High School, Government Secondary School Elekahia and Government Secondary School, Borokiri all in Rivers State.
